Digital sovereignty and composable architecture: why flexibility is becoming more important

During Emerce Talks, I joined a conversation about digital sovereignty and composable architecture. What struck me is how often organizations end up in the same situation: they want to move faster and deploy new technology, but at the same time, they get increasingly entangled in their current systems and vendors. In this article, I share my view on this and what I see happening in practice at organizations.

Many organizations want to be able to move faster. Deploying new technology, experimenting with AI, and at the same time keeping a grip on their digital landscape. That sounds logical. But in practice, I often see something else happening.

Systems grow stuck together. Small changes take up a lot of time, and switching to other software feels almost impossible. As a result, it also becomes harder to respond when circumstances change or if you want to become less dependent on specific vendors. And that exact question is starting to play a larger role. Organizations are looking more critically at their dependence on Big Tech and are wondering: how flexible are our systems actually? That is exactly where digital sovereignty and composable architecture meet. Because if you want to keep your freedom of choice, you also need to set up your digital landscape in such a way that you can change when necessary.


What do we mean by digital sovereignty and composable architecture?

Digital sovereignty is about how dependent you are on big, often American technology companies. More and more organizations are looking critically at that dependence and exploring whether there are European alternatives to the software and services they use. Composable architecture is a way to handle this.

It means that you build your digital platform out of separate components that you let work together. You are not dependent on one major solution, but combine different systems and services.

The idea is simple: if something changes or drops out, you can replace a component without having to rebuild your entire platform.


The problem does not just lie in your office software

When we talk about digital sovereignty, it often concerns the cloud and the question of where data is stored and processed. But in many organizations, it is much broader. Your digital platform often consists of a mix of systems and connections. Think of email services, payment solutions, CRM systems, marketing tools, or other software that directly or indirectly supports your service delivery. These systems are connected to each other and continuously exchange data. And that works fine, as long as everything keeps running.

But what if a vendor decides to stop their service in a specific region? Or if external factors ensure that you temporarily no longer have access to a crucial solution? Then you realize how dependent you have actually become.


Why composable architecture helps then

Composable architecture helps organizations reduce the risks of dependence. By building your platform from separate, well-cooperating components, it becomes simpler to replace a solution when needed. Do regulations change? Does a vendor stop their service delivery? Or do you want to switch to a European alternative? Then you do not have to redesign your entire platform. This way, you build flexibility and freedom of choice into your digital landscape. And that is exactly what makes composable architecture an important part of digital sovereignty.


The service layer as a practical translation

In practice, I often work with what you could call a service layer. That is a layer in between your systems. Instead of applications talking directly to each other, everything runs through one central layer. That seems like a technical detail, but it makes a big difference. You only have to build integrations once. And if you switch systems later, you do not have to reconnect everything. It looks a bit like a power strip: you plug everything into one point, instead of separate connections throughout the entire house.


What that delivers

For organizations working with many systems, that delivers three things:

More flexibility in your choices
You are less dependent on one vendor. You can switch tools more easily without rebuilding your entire landscape.

More grip on data
Data such as customer details, transactions, and documents remain more manageable. And more importantly: it remains clearly yours as an organization.

Room to experiment
You can test new tools more easily. For example, AI solutions or matching tools. Does it not work? Then you remove it again without a major impact.


In conclusion

The discussion about digital sovereignty is often about dependence on big tech companies. But in practice, it is about something else: how you set up your digital landscape so that you can keep moving. Composable architecture helps with that. Not as a goal in itself, but as a way to build in flexibility.
