Achmea: Climate Store makes sustainability easy

When 12,000 employees start working towards sustainability, you make a significant difference together. That's why Achmea provides each of them with a special climate budget. It can be spent on sustainable solutions like solar panels, insulation, energy-efficient appliances, or bicycles. Having a budget is one thing, but how do you encourage employees to spend it wisely? And how do you motivate other organizations to do the same and increase the impact together?

Online store for sustainable solutions

With the development of the Climate Store, we directly address both challenges: it is the place where Achmea employees can easily purchase sustainable solutions and a digital product that Achmea provides for other organizations. “In the Climate Store, all offerings from qualified suppliers are brought together in a clear manner,” says Product Owner Karin Stevens-Pierik from Centraal Beheer. “With the login code on their voucher, employees can shop easily, and we prevent employers from having to manually process a lot of declarations. Those who are unsure where to start with sustainability can receive advice through webinars or complete the online scan.”

Rush leads to significant sustainable impact

At the beginning of 2023, the Climate Shop from Achmea was launched. And it’s a hit! Karin: “More than half of our 12,000 employees have already used the platform for purchasing or declaring sustainable solutions. That exceeds our expectations!” Just the employees who invested in solar panels through the platform have already reduced 1,500 tons of CO₂ emissions in half a year. That's about 6,000 flights from Amsterdam to Paris. To further increase this share in sustainability, the platform is now also ready to be used by other organizations. In September 2023, the Climate Store for Attens went live and Syntrus followed later.

Process

A range of innovative digital services

Centraal Beheer and Freshheads have been working together since 2015. The Climate Store is part of a series of smart, innovative services. “Based on our previous experiences with Freshheads, we immediately trusted they would make a success of this,” Karin says. “The platform had to be user-friendly above all, and it has succeeded. We see that users easily and quickly find what they are looking for!”
