The problem is known to us all: natural gas extraction in Groningen has caused significant damage to buildings. Repairing this damage and reinforcing the structures is therefore a high priority. Since no building is the same, and environmental factors constantly vary, each building requires a unique set of reinforcement measures. If the necessary measures have to be determined for each building individually, it would take at least 20 years to complete all renovations. So the question arose: how do we select the most suitable measures without this becoming a time-consuming process?

De digitale maatregelencatalogus

In een maatschappelijk beladen context ontwikkelden we samen met Haskoning en VolkerWessels-onderneming Visser en Smit Bouw een methodiek om op grote schaal versterkingsadviezen op maat te genereren: de Groninger Maatregelencatalogus. In de webtool komen meer dan 150 versterkingsmaatregelen samen. De maatregelen zijn onderverdeeld in verschillende probleemgebieden in gebouwen en vervolgens gecategoriseerd op families, type maatregelen en varianten. Elke maatregel bevat belangrijke technische informatie, zoals kosten per m2, materiaalspecificaties, constructieve werking en impact op ruimtegebruik.

Engaging users

The first thing we had to do was understand the process in detail. And so we shadowed engineers, and mapped out the process and the needs of all stakeholders. By combining standardization of both process and product with digitalization at its core, we replaced a largely manual and labor-intensive process - which requires a lot of specialist knowledge - with the digital Groninger Maatregelencatalogus. We continue to improve the process based on practical experiences with the tool. All with the goal of restoring Groningen and making it earthquake-resistant as quickly as possible.

Result

Speed, uniformity and scalability

We have made major steps in simplifying and streamlining the complex renovation process. The collaborative effort of various stakeholders within construction, government and the community in Groningen has resulted in a much faster implementation of measures and improved safety for residents. Meanwhile, over 1041 professionals in 329 organizations are working with the tool. By using the catalog, engineers and executing parties together ensure that knowledge and practical experience on reinforcing measures are shared. Nobody has to reinvent the wheel anymore; parties select an existing and proven measure.
